Basic Emergency Shelter Services
Main components of The COMEA House are its Basic Emergency Shelter Services (BESS). BESS provides emergency housing to homeless men, women and families for up to 30 days, as well as a multitude of opportunities for each client. Case Management, LifeSkills Classes, substance abuse classes, a weekly church service and temporary job placement opportunities give clients a steady foundation to build upon.
Case Management is an imperative part of a client’s stay at COMEA. Case Management is a way for clients staying in the emergency shelter to get assistance with obtaining birth certificates and identification; finding jobs; learning which agencies can help with specific problems; and building a supportive relationship with staff members. While staying in the shelter, clients are required to meet weekly with our Case Manager. At each meeting, they must create short-term goals in which they have complete control. This Goal Setting requirement serves many purposes. It allows clients to identify immediate steps that can be taken to improve certain situations. It also helps with self-esteem and confidence; when a client can report that a goal has been met, he or she is made aware of the control that still lies within them.
