Transitional Living Program

In December of 2005, COMEA implemented a new way of assistance in the form of a Transitional Living Program (TLP). The TLP was designed specifically to assist single men and women en route from poverty to self-sufficiency. Our Transitional Living Complex consists of 12 efficiency apartments and in order to move in, tenants must have an income; pay a certain percentage of that income towards rent; put money away into a savings account; partake in community service; participate in Case Management meetings; and finally, attend monthly lifeskills classes.

COMEA implemented the TLP upon the realization that many emergency shelter clients were still struggling for independence after leaving the shelter. There are a variety of reasons this may happen. Many homeless people establish a safety network within the emergency shelter setting. Fellow clients become their family; case managers and administrative staff become their mentors. A drive to succeed is rooted in their surroundings, and the structured setting allows them to avoid failure and maintain progress on individual goals. However, when a client moves into his or her own apartment, lifelines are suddenly gone and long-term issues once again arise. The Transitional Living Complex aims to assist with the loss of relationships and improve lifeskills such as money management, nutrition, and job skills.
